E-commerce Marketing Consultant for Shopify and WooCommerce Brands
Looking for an e-commerce marketing consultant who’ll tell you what’s actually holding sales back? I’ve spent 20+ years in SEO, UX, conversion and paid media, much of it building and growing online stores, so you get a clear diagnosis and a plan tied to revenue, not another monthly report full of activity.
On this page
The short version
- Independent e-commerce marketing consultant based in Plymouth, working with Shopify and WooCommerce brands across the UK and beyond.
- Conversion rate, SEO and AI shopping visibility, email and retention, paid media and measurement, looked at together rather than as separate services.
- Diagnosis first: find where your store is leaking traffic, conversions and revenue before you spend more on ads or agencies.
- Senior judgement without a full-time hire, plus hands-on delivery on Shopify, WooCommerce and Klaviyo when the plan needs building.
- Start with a fixed-price Growth Audit from £1,500.
How I work with e-commerce brands
Most e-commerce marketing goes wrong in one of two ways: more budget poured into ads to cover a store that doesn’t convert, or five channels running at once with nobody deciding which one matters. As an e-commerce marketing consultant, I work the other way round.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Diagnose | Review your store, analytics, search visibility, email flows and ad accounts to find where traffic, conversions and revenue are leaking |
| 2. Prioritise | A short, ranked list: the few changes that will move revenue most, in the order to do them |
| 3. Plan | A 6–12 month roadmap with targets, owners and numbers attached, so everyone knows what’s happening and why |
| 4. Deliver or hand over | I build it, lead your team or freelancers through it, or hand a clear brief to your existing agency |
Why more traffic usually isn’t the answer
When sales stall, the instinct is to buy more traffic. In most stores I look at, the bigger wins are further down the funnel:
- Product pages don’t answer the questions buyers have, so they leave to check elsewhere and buy from whoever answered first.
- Checkout friction quietly kills orders: surprise delivery costs, forced account creation and slow mobile pages.
- Customers buy once and never hear from you again, because the email flows that should bring them back were never set up properly.
- Nobody trusts the numbers, so budget follows opinions instead of data.
The difference: fixing conversion and retention first makes every pound you spend on traffic afterwards work harder.
Conversion and store experience
Conversion rate optimisation starts with where customers drop out: collection pages, product pages, basket and checkout, on the phone most of them are shopping on. I look at navigation, product information, delivery and returns messaging, trust signals and page speed, then prioritise the fixes by revenue impact. More on the approach in conversion rate optimisation.
Search, product pages and AI shopping
Organic search is still the cheapest customer you’ll ever acquire, and in 2026 it includes being recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Mode when people ask what to buy. I cover technical and on-page SEO for collections and products, structured product data, and the AEO and GEO work that gets your products cited in AI answers. For the detail, see Shopify SEO optimisation, product page SEO for AI shopping and why your Shopify store isn’t showing up in ChatGPT.
Email and retention
Repeat customers are where e-commerce margins live. I set up and fix the flows that earn money while you sleep in Klaviyo or Mailchimp: welcome, browse and basket abandonment, post-purchase, win-back and replenishment, plus segments that stop you sending the same discount to everyone.
Paid media and measurement
Google Ads, Shopping and Meta campaigns judged on contribution to profit, not platform-reported ROAS. That starts with tracking you can trust: GA4 set up properly, conversions that match your store’s orders, and AI referral traffic separated out. See how to track AI search traffic in GA4.
Shopify and WooCommerce
I build and optimise stores on Shopify and WordPress/WooCommerce, from theme setup and site structure to speed and migrations. When a plan needs custom app development, photography or copywriting, I brief and work alongside the specialists you choose, so you’re never paying a consultant’s rate for the wrong job.
Who this is for
- Shopify and WooCommerce brands with steady sales that have plateaued
- Founders who are still the marketing department and need senior help without a full-time hire
- Brands with an agency or freelancers who need someone to set priorities and check the work
- Stores planning a redesign, replatform or migration who want to protect rankings and revenue
Not a fit: stores that haven’t launched yet or are looking for the cheapest hands to run ads. This is growth and revenue work, led by judgement.

E-commerce marketing consultant FAQs
What does an e-commerce marketing consultant do?
An e-commerce marketing consultant works out why an online store isn’t growing and what to do about it, across conversion, search, email, paid media and measurement. The value is in deciding what matters most and in what order, then making sure it gets done.
Should I hire an e-commerce consultant or an agency?
If you need someone to decide what to do, a consultant. If you already know exactly what you need and want it executed at volume, an agency. Many brands use both: a consultant to set priorities and check the work, an agency or freelancers to deliver it.
Do you only work with Shopify?
No. I work with Shopify and WordPress/WooCommerce stores. The diagnostic approach is the same whichever platform you’re on.
How much does an e-commerce marketing consultant cost?
A Growth Audit starts at £1,500, a Growth Roadmap at £4,000, and ongoing fractional leadership from £2,500 a month. Delivery work is quoted per project.
Will you work with our existing agency or developer?
Yes. Often the most useful thing I can do is give your existing team a clear, prioritised brief and check the results against it.
Do you also work with music brands?
Yes, roughly half my work is with labels, artists and music brands selling direct. See music marketing consultant.
