Product Page SEO for AI Shopping: Writing for Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity at Once

Your product page now has three readers: Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity. The good news is they want almost the same things. Here’s how to write and structure one page that works for all three, without three separate strategies.

In why your Shopify store isn’t showing up in ChatGPT, I covered how ChatGPT Shopping chooses products and the checklist to get into its carousel. This guide goes one level deeper, to the product page itself, and widens the lens to Google’s AI Mode and Perplexity too.

The short version

  • Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity all pull from the same raw material: your product data, your product page and what other people say about you.
  • Good product page SEO for AI shopping is mostly good product page SEO, done more thoroughly than most stores bother with.
  • Lead with a plain-English summary of what the product is, who it’s for and why it’s different. Put the specs in a table.
  • Answer real buyer questions on the page. AI assistants lift those answers straight into their replies.
  • Keep structured data, feeds and the page itself saying exactly the same thing about price, stock and variants.
  • Most AI shopping journeys still end on your site, so the page has to convert as well as get found.

One product page, three audiences

Each platform builds its shopping answers slightly differently, but the inputs overlap heavily:

PlatformWhere product data comes fromWhere the sale happens
Google (Search, AI Mode, Gemini)Merchant Center feeds, the Shopping Graph, structured data and crawled pagesMostly your site. Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is opening up checkout inside AI Mode and Gemini for merchants who connect through Merchant Center
ChatGPTMerchant product feeds, Shopify catalogue sync, pages crawled by OAI-SearchBot, reviews and editorial coverageYour site, or a merchant app inside ChatGPT. OpenAI wound down in-chat Instant Checkout in March 2026
PerplexityIts free Merchant Program, Shopify sync and live web searchYour site, or Instant Buy with PayPal inside Perplexity

Two things stand out. First, none of them let you pay for placement in their organic product answers, so the quality of your data and content decides who gets picked. Second, the sale still mostly lands on your own product page. Product page SEO has to cover both getting chosen and closing the sale.

Shopify tip: Shopify can syndicate your catalogue to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Mode through Shopify Catalog. That gets you into the pool. What’s on the page decides whether you get picked from it.

What Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity all reward

Strip away the branding and all three are trying to answer the same question: which product best fits what this shopper asked for, and can I trust the answer? They reward the same four things.

Complete, consistent product data

Titles, GTINs, brand, variants, materials, dimensions, price and stock. Gaps force the model to guess, and it would rather pick a competitor whose data is complete.

Clear, extractable content

Short summaries, tables, lists and question-and-answer blocks. AI assistants quote content they can lift cleanly. A wall of brand-voice copy is harder to use.

Proof from other people

Review volume and sentiment, editorial mentions, comparison articles and forum threads. This is where AI shopping differs most from classic SEO: what others say about the product carries a lot of weight.

Accuracy right now

Price, stock and delivery details that match across your page, your structured data and your feeds. Mismatches are one of the quickest ways to get dropped.

The anatomy of an AI-ready product page

Here’s the layout I recommend for product page SEO that serves search engines, AI assistants and the shopper at the same time.

1. A descriptive product title

Brand, product type, the key attribute and the variant. “Acme Trail 2 waterproof running shoe, men’s, navy” beats “Trail 2”. Match the title in your feed exactly.

2. A two or three sentence summary first

Say what it is, who it’s for and the one thing that makes it different. This is the passage AI assistants are most likely to quote, so make it accurate and specific rather than clever.

3. A specifications table

Materials, dimensions, weight, compatibility, care and what’s in the box. Tables are easy for both people and models to read, and they stop key facts getting lost in paragraphs.

4. “Best for” and “not ideal for”

Shoppers ask AI assistants things like “best running shoe for wide feet” or “quiet blender for a small flat”. A short section spelling out who the product suits, and who it doesn’t, matches those conversational queries directly. Being honest about the limits also builds trust.

5. Real buyer questions, answered

Pull questions from customer emails, reviews, live chat and returns. Answer each in two or three sentences. This is the single most useful content you can add for AI shopping.

6. Reviews on the page

Show the rating, review count and a handful of detailed reviews in HTML, not only inside a widget that loads later. If a crawler can’t see them, they don’t count.

7. Delivery, returns and warranty

State delivery times, costs, returns window and warranty in plain text on the page. Shoppers ask about these, and Google can use the same details in its results when you mark them up.

Who writes it: I plan the page structure, data and SEO. The product copy itself is best written by the brand or a specialist copywriter who knows the product inside out.

The data layer: schema and feeds

Product structured data

Use Product markup with Offer details (price, currency, availability), brand, GTIN or MPN, AggregateRating and reviews, plus shipping and return policy details where you can. On WordPress, WooCommerce and Shopify most of this comes from the theme or an SEO plugin. Check it with Google’s Rich Results Test rather than assuming.

Feeds

  • Google: keep Merchant Center feeds complete and synced, and fix any disapprovals or warnings quickly.
  • ChatGPT: Shopify stores can sync automatically. Other platforms can apply to OpenAI’s merchant program and submit a product feed.
  • Perplexity: join the free Merchant Program, or let Shopify sync your catalogue.

Crawler access

Make sure robots.txt doesn’t block Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot from your product pages. Blocking them is the quickest way to vanish from AI shopping answers.

Rule of thumb: your page, your structured data and your feeds should never disagree. If the page says £79 and in stock, the feed and the schema must say the same.

Small tweaks for each platform

Google

Merchant Center health matters most. Fill in optional attributes like product highlights, product details and size information. They feed the Shopping Graph that powers AI Mode.

ChatGPT

Third-party proof carries a lot of weight. Earn reviews, get featured in roundups and comparison articles, and keep an eye on what Reddit and forums say about your products.

Perplexity

Perplexity cites its sources, so clear claims backed by specific numbers tend to get quoted. Buying guides and comparison pages on your own site help it understand where each product fits.

Product page mistakes that cost you AI visibility

  • Manufacturer copy pasted on every stockist’s site. If your page says the same as 40 others, there’s no reason to choose yours.
  • Key details hidden in images. Sizing charts and specs saved as images are invisible to most crawlers.
  • Reviews only in JavaScript widgets. If they don’t appear in the page source, assume they don’t count.
  • Stale stock and pricing. Feeds that sync weekly fall out of step with the page.
  • Thin variant pages. Each colour or size should inherit the full description, not a single line.
  • Blocking AI crawlers by accident. Check robots.txt and any bot protection on your CDN.

Product page SEO FAQ

Is product page SEO for AI different from normal SEO?

Not much. The foundations are the same: complete data, clear content and trust signals. AI shopping just punishes gaps harder, because assistants show a handful of products rather than a page of results. For the wider picture, see AEO vs GEO vs SEO.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT or Perplexity product results?

Not in their organic product recommendations. Placement comes from your data quality, relevance and reputation, so the work on the page is what moves the needle.

Do I need to rewrite every product page?

No. Start with your best sellers and highest-margin products, apply the checklist, then roll the template out across the rest of the catalogue.

Does this work for WooCommerce as well as Shopify?

Yes. Shopify has the easiest route into AI shopping feeds, but WooCommerce stores can submit feeds to Google Merchant Center, apply to OpenAI’s merchant program and join Perplexity’s Merchant Program. The on-page work is identical.
