How to Track AI Search Traffic in GA4

ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s own AI Mode are now sending people to your website. Here’s how to find your AI search traffic in GA4, what the new AI Assistants channel misses, and how to measure the AI visibility that never turns into a click.

The short version

  • Since 13 May 2026, GA4 has an AI Assistants default channel. It picks up ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and others automatically, but only from that date on.
  • It doesn’t catch everything. Perplexity often still lands in Referral, and Google AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks count as Organic Search.
  • A custom AI Search channel group fixes most of the gaps, and it applies to your historical data too.
  • For Google’s AI features, use the Generative AI report in Search Console, which shows impressions only.
  • Some AI traffic arrives with no referrer at all and shows up as Direct. Ask customers how they found you.

AI search traffic is still a small slice of most sites’ visits. It tends to be a valuable slice, though, because people arrive after an assistant has already recommended you. If you can’t see it, you can’t tell whether your AEO and GEO work is paying off, or which pages AI tools trust enough to cite.

Everything below works in a standard GA4 property. You don’t need a developer or Google Tag Manager.

Where AI search traffic shows up in GA4

Before you change anything, it helps to know where each AI platform’s clicks currently end up. Google hasn’t published the full list of sources behind the new channel, so treat this as a guide and check your own data.

Where the click came fromWhere it usually lands in GA4
ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, DeepSeek, GrokAI Assistants channel (medium “ai-assistant”) from 13 May 2026. Before that, mostly Referral.
PerplexityOften still Referral (perplexity.ai / referral). Check your own source list.
Claude, Meta AI, Mistral, You.comVaries. Usually Referral if the browser passes a referrer.
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeOrganic Search (google / organic), indistinguishable from a normal blue-link click.
AI apps and copied linksDirect or Unassigned, because no referrer is sent.

That last row is the uncomfortable one. A lot of AI usage happens in apps, and app clicks often arrive with no referrer at all. Whatever you set up, your AI numbers are a floor, not a ceiling.

Step 1: Check the AI Assistants channel

Start with what GA4 gives you for free.

  • Go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
  • Make sure the primary dimension is Session primary channel group (Default channel group).
  • Look for the AI Assistants row. If you see nothing, either you’ve had no recognised AI visits since May 2026 or the date range is set before then.
  • Click the + next to the dimension and add Session source to see which assistants are sending visits.

This is a good first look, but don’t report on it alone. It isn’t retroactive, so any comparison with earlier in 2026 will be misleading, and it leaves out Perplexity and Google’s AI features.

Step 2: Build an AI Search channel group

A custom channel group lets you define AI traffic your own way. GA4 also applies channel groups to historical data, so you get your pre-May numbers back.

Create the group

  • Go to Admin → Data display → Channel groups.
  • Click Create new channel group. GA4 starts you with a copy of the default channels, which is what you want.
  • Name it something like Channels incl. AI Search.

Add an AI Search channel

  • Click Add new channel and name it AI Search.
  • Add a condition: Session source → matches regex → paste the pattern from the table below.
  • Click Or and add a second condition: Session medium → exactly matches → ai-assistant. This catches anything Google recognises that your pattern doesn’t.
  • Save the channel, then drag it above Referral (and above Google’s own AI Assistants row). GA4 checks channels from top to bottom, so if Referral sits above it, your AI traffic gets swallowed.

GA4 regex has to match the whole value, which is why the source pattern is wrapped in .* at both ends.

SettingWhat to enter
Channel nameAI Search
Condition 1Session source → matches regex →
.*(chatgpt|openai|perplexity|claude\.ai|gemini\.google|bard\.google|copilot\.microsoft|deepseek|grok|meta\.ai|mistral|you\.com).*
Or condition 2Session medium → exactly matches → ai-assistant
PositionAbove Referral and above AI Assistants

Order matters: if AI Search sits below Referral, Perplexity and every pre-May ChatGPT visit will still be filed as Referral.

New assistants appear all the time. Every month or so, look through your Referral sources for anything AI-shaped and add it to the pattern.

Use it in your reports

Back in Traffic acquisition, click the dimension dropdown and switch to Session [your channel group name]. You’ll now see an AI Search row you can compare like-for-like with Organic Search, Paid and Email, going back as far as your data does.

Step 3: Build an AI Search traffic exploration

Channel totals tell you how much traffic AI sends. An exploration tells you which pages it lands on and whether it converts, and that’s what tells you where to put your effort.

  • Go to Explore → Blank and name it AI Search traffic.
  • Dimensions: Session source, Landing page + query string, Session [your channel group], Date.
  • Metrics: Sessions, Engaged sessions, Engagement rate, Key events, Total revenue (if you sell online).
  • Rows: Landing page. Columns: Session source.
  • Filter: Session [your channel group] exactly matches AI Search.

What to look for

  • The pages AI cites most. These are your strongest AI-visible assets. Keep them up to date, and link from them to the pages that convert.
  • Engagement against organic. AI visitors often arrive with a specific question already answered, so it’s normal to see fewer sessions with higher intent.
  • Revenue by assistant. For Shopify and WooCommerce stores, this shows whether ChatGPT shopping visibility is earning its keep. If it isn’t showing up at all, here’s why your Shopify store may be missing from ChatGPT.

Tip: many ChatGPT links arrive with utm_source=chatgpt.com already attached. If you see that in the “Landing page + query string” dimension, it’s ChatGPT tagging its own links, not something you set up.

Step 4: Measure AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search Console

GA4 can’t separate Google’s AI features from normal organic search. A click from an AI Overview or AI Mode answer arrives as google / organic, the same as any other.

Search Console is where you see it instead. In June 2026 Google announced a Generative AI performance report, and it’s been rolling out in stages since:

  • Go to Performance in Search Console and look for Generative AI in the menu. If it isn’t there yet, your property hasn’t been given access.
  • It shows impressions only: how often a link to your site appeared in an AI Overview or AI Mode answer. There are no clicks, CTR, position or query data.
  • You can break it down by page, country, device and date.
  • These impressions are already included in your normal Web search totals, so don’t add the two together.

The practical use is to pair it with GA4. Take the pages with the most generative AI impressions in Search Console and check their organic landing page sessions in GA4. Pages with high AI impressions but flat or falling clicks are being read in the answer and not visited, so they need a stronger reason to click through.

Step 5: Catch the AI search traffic GA4 can’t see

Some AI influence never shows up as a referral. Someone asks ChatGPT for “the best house music PR agency in the UK”, sees your name, then Googles you or types in your URL a day later. In GA4 that looks like branded search or Direct.

Three cheap ways to see it

  • Ask. Add “How did you hear about us?” to your enquiry form and checkout, with ChatGPT / AI assistant as an option. It’s the most reliable AI attribution you’ll get.
  • Watch Direct traffic to deep pages. People rarely type a long blog URL by hand. A rise in Direct sessions landing on specific articles often means links shared from AI apps.
  • Track branded search. In Search Console, filter queries containing your brand name. Growth that lines up with improved AI visibility is a reasonable sign that assistants are recommending you.

Put it on one dashboard

If you report to a client or a boss, pull the GA4 AI Search channel and the Search Console Generative AI impressions into a single Looker Studio page. Show it monthly next to organic search. It doesn’t need to be clever. It just needs to be checked every month.

AI search traffic in GA4: FAQ

Does GA4 track ChatGPT traffic automatically?

Yes, from 13 May 2026. Visits that GA4 recognises as coming from ChatGPT get the medium “ai-assistant” and appear in the AI Assistants channel. Earlier visits stay in Referral unless you build a custom channel group.

Why is Perplexity traffic still showing as Referral?

Google hasn’t published the full list of sources in its AI Assistants channel, and Perplexity is often left out. A custom channel group with a source regex that includes “perplexity” fixes it.

Can I see Google AI Overviews clicks in GA4?

No. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are reported as google / organic. Use the Generative AI report in Search Console for impressions, and compare it with your organic landing page data in GA4.

Do custom channel groups work on historical data?

Yes. Custom channel groups in GA4 are applied retroactively, which is why they’re the best way to compare AI search traffic before and after May 2026.

Why are my AI search traffic numbers so low?

Partly because AI app clicks often arrive with no referrer and land in Direct, and partly because many AI answers satisfy the question without a click. Treat your GA4 figure as a minimum, and use Search Console impressions and “How did you hear about us?” answers to fill in the picture.
