SEO Services: Smart, Straight-Talking SEO That Works

SEO isn’t about tricks. It’s about showing up when your customers are searching, on Google and now in AI answers too. My SEO services find what’s holding your site back, fix what matters most and show you exactly what changed.

The short version

  • Independent SEO consultant based in Plymouth, working with businesses across the UK.
  • Organic, local and e-commerce SEO, plus AEO and GEO so you show up in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers.
  • Diagnosis first: every engagement starts by finding the few changes that will make the biggest difference.
  • Clear reporting on rankings, traffic, conversions and AI search visibility. No jargon, no vague promises.
  • Start with a fixed-price Growth Audit from £1,500.

Signs you need SEO services

Most businesses don’t come looking for SEO services because they love search engines. They come because something isn’t adding up. If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth a proper look:

  • Traffic has dropped after a Google update, a redesign or a platform migration, and nobody can say why.
  • You rank for your brand name but not for the services or products people actually search for.
  • Competitors with weaker offers keep appearing above you.
  • You’re paying for SEO every month but can’t link the work to enquiries or sales.
  • Your site gets traffic that doesn’t convert, so visitors arrive and leave without doing anything.
  • You don’t appear in AI answers when people ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI Mode for recommendations in your area.

Each of these has a different cause. Good SEO services start by finding the real one rather than throwing the same checklist at every site.

Who my SEO services are for

My SEO services suit businesses that already have something worth finding and want search to become a reliable source of customers, rather than a monthly cost nobody can explain.

Business typeWhere SEO usually helps most
Local service businessesLocal SEO, Google Business Profile, reviews and service pages for each area you cover
E-commerce brandsTechnical SEO, category and product pages, product feeds and site structure
B2B and SaaSContent strategy, comparison and solution pages, and answering buyers’ questions before they talk to sales
Music brands and labelsRanking for artist and release names, event pages and visibility in AI answers. See music marketing

If you’re pre-launch or don’t yet have a website, SEO services are usually best planned alongside the build rather than added afterwards.

How my SEO services work

Most SEO goes wrong in one of two ways: a long list of fixes with no priority, or monthly activity nobody can link to results. I work the other way round.

StepWhat happens
1. DiagnoseA technical, content and competitor audit to find where you’re losing visibility, traffic and revenue
2. PrioritiseA short, ranked plan: the few changes that will move the needle, in the order they should happen
3. FixTechnical, on-page and structural SEO, done by me or handed to your team with clear instructions
4. MeasureRankings, organic traffic, conversions and AI search referrals, reported in plain English

Because I’m an independent SEO consultant rather than an agency, you deal with the person doing the work. There are no account managers passing messages along and no junior team learning on your site.

What an SEO audit covers

Every engagement starts with an audit. It’s scoped to your site and goals, but most cover the same ground:

AreaWhat I check
Crawling and indexingWhether search engines can find, crawl and index the pages that matter, and whether they’re wasting time on pages that don’t
Site speed and Core Web VitalsHow quickly pages load and respond on mobile, using real-user data where it’s available
On-page SEOTitles, headings, internal links and content, page by page, against what people actually search for
Keyword gapsSearches your competitors rank for that you don’t, sized by demand and commercial value
BacklinksThe quality of sites linking to you, and realistic opportunities to earn more
Local presenceGoogle Business Profile, listings and reviews, if you serve customers in specific areas
AI visibilityWhether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI features mention or cite your business

The output is a ranked list of fixes, not a 90-page export from an SEO tool. It’s the foundation for every other part of my SEO services.

Technical SEO foundations

Technical SEO is the plumbing. If it’s broken, nothing built on top of it works properly. The usual culprits are slow pages, duplicate content, broken redirects after a redesign, pages blocked from indexing by mistake and messy site structure.

  • Fixing crawl and indexing issues reported in Google Search Console
  • Improving page speed and Core Web Vitals
  • Cleaning up redirects, canonicals and duplicate pages
  • Adding structured data so search engines understand your business, products and reviews
  • Making sure your XML sitemap and robots.txt help search engines rather than confuse them

Platforms: most of my technical SEO work is on WordPress, WooCommerce and Shopify, which cover the vast majority of small business and e-commerce sites.

Organic SEO that brings real growth

If you want to grow sustainably, you need more than blog posts and backlinks. Organic SEO starts with keyword research grounded in what your customers actually search for, then tightens your on-page structure, internal linking and page speed, and earns links the right way.

The aim is simple: the right page ranking for the right search, with content that answers the question better than anyone else. That’s what lasting organic growth looks like, and it compounds over time in a way paid ads don’t.

Local SEO that gets you found nearby

Want more calls, more visits and more local customers? Local SEO puts your business on the map, literally. For service businesses and shops, it’s often the fastest route to new enquiries.

  • Optimising your Google Business Profile with the right categories, services, photos and posts
  • Fixing inconsistent business names, addresses and phone numbers across directories
  • Location and service pages that speak to people near you
  • A simple plan for earning and responding to reviews

Local SEO also feeds AI search. When someone asks an assistant for “the best accountant in Plymouth”, consistent listings and genuine reviews are part of what decides who gets mentioned.

E-commerce SEO for online stores

Online store owners need traffic that buys. E-commerce SEO goes beyond keywords: I fix crawl and indexing issues, optimise product and category pages and clean up site structure so search engines and shoppers find what they need, on Shopify or WooCommerce.

  • Category pages built around how shoppers search, not just how your stock is organised
  • Product titles, descriptions and structured data that match the questions buyers ask
  • Faceted navigation and filters that don’t create thousands of duplicate pages
  • Product feeds for Google Merchant Center and AI shopping assistants

SEO is one lever. If your store needs the whole picture, from conversion and email to paid media and measurement, see e-commerce marketing consultant.

Product pages now have to work for AI shopping assistants as well as Google. I’ve written about that in product page SEO for AI shopping.

More people now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI Mode before they ever click a search result. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO) make your content easy for those systems to understand, trust and cite.

  • Clear, extractable answers to the questions your customers ask
  • Structured data and consistent business information
  • Making sure AI crawlers can reach your important pages
  • Tracking AI search traffic in GA4 so you can see what it’s worth

The good news: most of what helps in AI search is good SEO done thoroughly. Not sure how they differ? Read AEO vs GEO vs SEO.

Content strategy that search engines and people trust

Content is one of your strongest SEO tools, but only if it’s written for people first. I plan the content strategy: which topics to cover, how pages should be structured and how they link together, so your content answers real questions and naturally ticks the SEO boxes.

  • Topic and keyword maps that show which page should rank for what
  • Content briefs with the questions to answer, headings and internal links
  • Refresh plans for existing pages that have slipped down the rankings
  • Pruning or merging thin pages that drag the rest of the site down

Who writes it: the writing itself is done by you, your team or a specialist copywriter. I provide the briefs, structure and SEO guidance so every piece has a clear job.

SEO consulting that cuts through the noise

Algorithm changes, ranking drops and conflicting advice make it hard to know what’s truly working. With SEO consulting, I dig into your analytics, audit your site and give you a clear action plan. No guesswork, just practical steps to grow your visibility.

That includes protecting your rankings during a website redesign or platform migration. Redirect mapping, content checks and post-launch monitoring are much cheaper than recovering lost traffic afterwards.

What reporting looks like

Reports from many SEO services are long, full of charts and hard to act on. Mine are short and answer three questions: what changed, why it changed and what happens next.

  • Search visibility: rankings for the searches that matter to your business, not hundreds of vanity keywords
  • Traffic and conversions: organic visits, enquiries and sales from Google Analytics, so SEO is judged on revenue
  • AI search: referrals from ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants, plus where your brand is being mentioned
  • Work completed: what went live, and what’s queued for next month

Plain English: if a report needs a glossary to understand it, it isn’t doing its job.

How long SEO takes to work

SEO isn’t instant, and anyone promising first-page rankings in a fortnight is guessing. Here’s a realistic picture:

TimeframeWhat you can expect
Weeks 1–4Audit complete, priorities agreed, technical fixes start going live
Months 1–3Technical and on-page fixes take effect. Rankings for pages that were held back often move first
Months 3–6New and improved content starts to rank. Local visibility and enquiries usually build in this window
Months 6–12Topical authority and links compound. This is where organic growth becomes reliable

The exact pace depends on your starting point, your competition and how quickly changes go live.

Common SEO mistakes I fix

  • Targeting the wrong keywords. Ranking for searches with no buying intent looks good in reports and does nothing for revenue.
  • Several pages competing for the same search. Google can’t tell which one to rank, so neither ranks well.
  • Thin location or service pages. Dozens of near-identical pages rarely help and can hold the whole site back.
  • Redesigns without redirects. One of the fastest ways to lose years of rankings.
  • Chasing tools instead of customers. A perfect score in an SEO plugin doesn’t matter if the page doesn’t answer the searcher’s question.

Why work with an independent SEO consultant

Agencies can be the right choice for large, multi-channel campaigns. For most small and mid-sized businesses, an independent SEO consultant is simpler, more senior and easier to hold to account.

Typical SEO agencyIndependent SEO consultant
Who does the workOften a junior team, managed by an account managerThe senior person you spoke to at the start
FocusMonthly deliverables and hours usedThe few changes most likely to grow revenue
ReportingLong templated reportsShort, plain-English updates tied to enquiries and sales
ContractsOften fixed termsFixed-price audits and flexible ongoing work
OverheadsOffices, sales teams and layers of managementLower costs, so more of your budget goes into the work itself

As an SEO consultant, I’m also happy to work alongside an existing agency or developer, setting priorities and checking the work rather than replacing anyone.

SEO services FAQs

What types of businesses use your SEO services?

Local service providers, SaaS start-ups and e-commerce brands, plus labels, artists and music brands. Anyone who wants real, trackable growth through SEO.

How much do SEO services cost?

Most clients start with a Growth Audit from £1,500. Ongoing SEO is usually part of a Fractional Growth Lead retainer from £2,500 a month, or scoped as project work through Delivery.

Can you guarantee first-page rankings?

No, and be wary of anyone who does. Nobody controls Google’s results. What I can promise is a clear plan, honest reporting and work focused on the changes most likely to grow traffic and revenue.

How do you measure success?

Keyword rankings and organic traffic, but mostly enquiries, sales and revenue. You’ll always know what’s working and what’s next.

Do I need local SEO if I sell online across the UK?

Usually not as a priority. Local SEO matters most for businesses that serve customers in specific towns or regions. National e-commerce brands get more from technical, category and product page SEO.

Can you help with a site redesign?

Yes. I’ll make sure your redesign keeps your rankings intact, with redirects, content mapping and checks before and after launch.

Will you work with my existing developer or agency?

Yes. Many clients already have a developer or agency. I set the SEO priorities and briefs, and they implement them, or I do the work directly where that’s quicker.

What’s different about your SEO approach?

No cookie-cutter strategies and no shady tactics. Diagnosis first, then technical SEO, content strategy and UX working together for lasting results.

What happens when Google releases a core update?

Google updates its ranking systems several times a year. If your traffic drops after an update, I look at which pages and searches were affected, compare them with the pages that gained, and focus on the content and quality signals that explain the change. Panicking and rewriting everything rarely helps.

Do you offer SEO services outside Plymouth?

Yes. I’m based in Plymouth, Devon, but most SEO work is done remotely for clients across the UK and internationally. Local SEO can be set up for any town or region you serve.

Will SEO still matter as AI search grows?

Yes. AI assistants still rely on websites they can crawl, understand and trust. The businesses that show up in AI answers are usually the ones with strong SEO foundations, clear content and a good reputation across the web.

Do you write the content?

No. I plan, brief and optimise the content; you or your copywriter write it, so it sounds like your business. I review drafts and optimise them for search and AI answers before they go live.

How do I get started?

Get in touch with a short note about your business and goals. Most clients start with a Growth Audit.
