AEO vs GEO vs SEO: What Actually Changes When AI Answers the Search
“Ranking” used to mean one thing: a blue link on page one of Google. In 2026 it has split into three. Here’s what SEO, AEO and GEO each mean, where they overlap, and what changes in practice if you want to be found, quoted or cited.

The short version
- SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) gets your page ranked and clicked on a traditional results page. The goal is a visit.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) gets your specific fact, definition or answer selected and quoted by an AI or voice system. The goal is being the answer.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) gets your brand cited, mentioned or recommended inside a generative AI response, even when the user never visits your site. The goal is being the source.
- All three share the same infrastructure (technical accessibility, content quality, trust signals) but optimise for different outcomes and need to be measured separately.
For twenty years, “ranking” meant one thing: getting a blue link onto page one of Google. Google still returns ten blue links, but a huge and growing share of the answers your customers see are now written by an AI model rather than read from your page. An AI Overview summarises your category. ChatGPT or Perplexity cites a handful of sources instead of listing ten. Google’s own AI Mode skips the results page altogether.
The three acronyms get used almost interchangeably in marketing decks, which is a problem. They’re not the same discipline, they’re not measured the same way, and mixing them up is how budget gets spent chasing the wrong metric.
SEO still matters, it’s just no longer the whole game
Every AEO and GEO tactic sits on top of ordinary SEO. AI systems still need to crawl, index and trust your site before they’ll cite it, so the fundamentals (site speed, clean structure, backlinks, E-E-A-T signals) haven’t gone away. What’s changed is what a “win” looks like once you rank.
Google’s AI Overviews have been suppressing click-through rate on the queries they appear on since launch, and the picture in 2026 is more nuanced than a flat decline. After roughly 18 months of falling CTR, organic click-through on queries showing an AI Overview climbed from a floor of 1.3% in December 2025 to 2.4% in February 2026.
Being cited as a source inside an AI Overview delivers around 120% more clicks per impression than not being cited.
Even then, AI Overview queries still underperform ordinary queries by roughly 38%. Citation status, not ranking position, is increasingly the variable that decides whether you get a click at all.
Query type matters too. AI Overviews show up on about 36% of informational searches but only 5–8% of commercial and transactional ones. So the pressure on SEO is heaviest on exactly the content (guides, explainers, comparisons) that used to be a reliable top-of-funnel traffic driver.
What AEO actually is
Answer Engine Optimisation is the practice of structuring content so AI systems (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, voice assistants) can understand, trust and quote it directly as the answer to a specific question. Where SEO’s unit of success is a ranked page, AEO’s unit of success is a single extractable answer. In practice that means:
- Lead with the answer. Open key pages with a direct, 30–60 word answer to the question in the heading, before any preamble.
- Write self-contained paragraphs. One to three sentences that make sense pulled out of context, because that’s exactly what an AI system will do with them.
- Use question-format headings. Mirror how people actually ask: “how does X work” rather than “X: an overview”.
- Add matching schema. FAQ and Article markup that matches the visible content exactly.
- Show your trust signals. Keep authorship, credentials and last-updated dates visible. AI systems use them to decide who to quote.
AEO is additive to SEO, not a replacement for it: SEO still has to get the page discovered before AEO can get a sentence out of it quoted.

What GEO actually is
Generative Engine Optimisation is the broader discipline of positioning your brand so generative AI platforms cite, recommend or mention you when answering a question in your category. Not necessarily by quoting one page, but by drawing on everything the model knows about you from across the web.
ChatGPT alone reached over 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, up from 500 million a year earlier.
And that’s before counting Perplexity, Google’s Gemini and AI Mode. Where AEO optimises a page, GEO optimises an entity. The factors that consistently show up in what gets a brand cited are:
- Entity clarity. A consistent, unambiguous answer everywhere online to “who is this, what category are they in, what are they known for”.
- Content extractability. The same self-contained, front-loaded writing AEO demands, because generative models retrieve passages, not pages.
- Multi-platform presence. Visibility beyond your own website (YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, review platforms, earned media), because AI models weight independent, third-party validation more heavily than your own marketing copy.
- Different measurement. Citation frequency, share of voice against competitors and sentiment, rather than rank position and sessions.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO: where they overlap, and where they diverge
The overlap is bigger than the differences suggest: all three need the same technical accessibility, the same accurate and current information, and largely the same content quality bar. What changes is what you’re optimising for once the content is found (a click, a quote or a mention) and so what you measure as success.
| Aspect | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Rank and get clicked | Get quoted as the answer | Get cited or mentioned by the AI |
| Unit optimised | A page | An answer or passage | A brand entity |
| Success metric | Rankings, CTR, sessions | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice answers | Citation frequency, share of voice, sentiment |
| Key platforms | Google, Bing organic results | Featured snippets, voice assistants, AI Overviews | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Mode |
| User still visits your site? | Usually: that’s the point | Sometimes | Often not |
Which does your business need?
For most established businesses the answer is all three, but the order matters.
Prioritise SEO if your site has technical issues, thin content or a weak backlink profile, you’re a new or recently relaunched site, or organic traffic is your main growth lever. AI systems won’t cite a site Google doesn’t trust.
Prioritise AEO and GEO if you already rank well but AI tools don’t mention you, your category’s searches trigger AI Overviews, or you sell high-trust services where being recommended matters more than the click.
Invest in all three if you’re in a competitive market and want visibility that compounds across both search results and AI answers.
What actually changes: a working playbook
Seven moves, in order. The first is the floor everything else stands on.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1. Keep the SEO foundations solid | Site speed, crawlability, clean structure and genuine E-E-A-T signals. None of the AEO or GEO tactics below work on a site Google and AI crawlers can’t reliably access or trust. |
| 2. Answer in the first 30–60 words | Put the direct answer immediately under the heading, then expand with detail, context and nuance. |
| 3. Write in extractable chunks | Short paragraphs, FAQs, comparison tables and clear pros and cons: content that makes sense lifted out of the page, because that’s how it will be used. |
| 4. Match schema to visible content | FAQ, Article, Product and Review markup that mirrors the page word for word, not a rough summary of it. |
| 5. Fix your entity clarity | State your name, category and expertise consistently across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and any directories or listings you appear in. |
| 6. Earn mentions off-site | Reviews, comparison articles, Reddit threads, YouTube coverage and PR carry more weight with AI systems than your own copy, because they can’t easily verify what you say about yourself. |
| 7. Track new metrics too | Rankings and sessions still matter, but add citation frequency, share of voice for your category’s key questions and AI-referral traffic (increasingly visible as a source in GA4). |
How to measure success across all three
| Discipline | What to track |
|---|---|
| SEO | Keyword rankings, organic sessions, click-through rate and, increasingly, how your CTR splits between AI Overview queries and ordinary ones. |
| AEO | Featured snippet and People Also Ask appearances, FAQ rich result impressions and, where you can see it, voice assistant answer selection. |
| GEO | How often you’re cited in AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answers for your target questions, your share of voice against named competitors, and referral traffic from AI platforms as a distinct channel. |
None of these are vanity numbers. An estimated 80% of consumers now rely on AI-generated results for at least 40% of their searches, and organic web traffic has fallen an estimated 15–25% across many sectors as a direct result.
Around 83% of searches with an AI Overview end without a click to the open web, rising to roughly 93% inside Google’s AI Mode.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO: the bottom line
SEO isn’t dead, and AEO and GEO aren’t replacements for it. They’re what SEO’s job has expanded to include now that a growing share of “search” happens inside an AI-generated answer instead of a results page.
The brands doing well in 2026 haven’t abandoned their SEO fundamentals; they’ve built AEO and GEO on top of them. All three reward the same thing done properly: clear, accurate, well-structured content that both people and machines can trust.
If you’ve only been tracking rankings and sessions, you’re measuring a shrinking slice of how customers find you. The other two-thirds of the picture, whether AI systems quote you and cite you, is where the next few years of visibility will be won or lost.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO FAQ
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO optimises a page so a specific answer gets quoted by an AI or voice system. GEO optimises your brand as an entity so generative AI platforms cite, mention or recommend you, drawing on everything they know about you across the web.
Is SEO dead in 2026?
No. AI systems still need to crawl, index and trust your site before they’ll cite it, so SEO is the foundation that AEO and GEO are built on.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AEO is additive: SEO gets the page discovered, then AEO gets a sentence from it selected as the answer.
How do you measure GEO?
Track how often you’re cited in AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini for your target questions, your share of voice against named competitors, and referral traffic from AI platforms.
What does GEO stand for?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation: shaping your content and brand presence so generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews cite, mention or recommend you.
How long does GEO take to show results?
It depends on the tactic. Rewriting pages to lead with direct answers can show up in AI Overviews within weeks of Google recrawling them. Brand-level citations in tools like ChatGPT build more slowly, typically over several months of consistent third-party mentions.
