Which UK House Music Labels Does ChatGPT Recommend?

Original research: we asked ChatGPT 21 questions about UK house music labels and logged every label it named. One label appeared in almost two-thirds of the answers, 97 different labels were mentioned, and nearly three-quarters of them showed up just once.

The short version

  • Defected was named in 13 of 21 answers (62%), more than any other UK house music label.
  • Six more labels appeared in at least a third of answers: Glasgow Underground, Glitterbox, Toolroom, Hot Creations, Shall Not Fade and Classic Music Company.
  • ChatGPT named 97 different labels in total, and 71 of them (73%) appeared only once.
  • Genre matters more than size. The afro house, melodic house, “new labels” and “reputation with DJs” prompts didn’t name a single one of the top seven.
  • Ministry of Sound came up in just one answer out of 21.
  • In 5 of 21 answers, ChatGPT recommended at least one label that isn’t based in the UK.

This is a follow-up to our look at the most visible house music DJs of 2026. That piece was about artists. This one asks the same question of the labels behind them: when someone asks an AI assistant where to find UK house music, who gets recommended?

How we ran the research

We wrote 21 questions that a fan, DJ or producer might realistically ask about UK house music labels, from “What are the best UK house music record labels?” to “Which labels should I send my demos to?”. The full list is further down.

  • Where: ChatGPT on the web, from the UK.
  • When: 3 October 2026.
  • How: each question asked once, in a fresh temporary chat, without being signed in, so no account history or memory could shape the answer.
  • What we counted: whether a label was named anywhere in the answer. Each label counts once per answer, however often it was repeated.
  • Clean-up: imprint spellings were merged (for example “Toolroom” and “Toolroom Records”). Glitterbox and DFTD were kept separate from Defected because ChatGPT listed them separately.

Read this as a snapshot, not a ranking: AI answers change from one run to the next. 21 answers is enough to see patterns, not to settle arguments.

On average, each answer named about nine labels.

Six things the data shows

1. Defected is ChatGPT’s default answer

Ask a broad question about UK house music labels and Defected is almost always first or near the top. It appeared in 13 of 21 answers, including every general “best”, “biggest” and “top 10” question. Its sister label Glitterbox appeared in 9 answers, every time alongside Defected itself. No other label family comes close.

2. There’s a tight top tier of seven

Seven labels appeared in a third or more of answers: Defected, Glasgow Underground, Glitterbox, Toolroom, Hot Creations, Shall Not Fade and Classic Music Company. After that, the share drops sharply to 19%. If you’re not in that seven, you’re competing for scraps in broad answers.

3. Genre questions reshuffle everything

Four prompts didn’t name any of the top seven: afro house, melodic and progressive house, new labels to watch in 2026, and labels with the strongest reputation among DJs. Those answers went to labels like Anjunadeep, Colorize, Hessle Audio, Hypercolour, Chummy Choons and Southpoint instead. For smaller labels this is the opening: owning a specific sound is far easier than winning “best UK house label”.

4. Ministry of Sound barely registers

One of Britain’s best-known dance music brands was named in just one answer, the straight “Top 10 UK house record labels” question. In every question about deep, soulful, underground, vinyl or demo-friendly labels, it didn’t appear. Commercial size doesn’t automatically translate into being recommended for house music.

5. ChatGPT doesn’t always check the passport

In 5 of 21 answers, ChatGPT recommended at least one label based outside the UK as a UK label, including Soulfuric (US), MoBlack (Italy), Heist (Netherlands) and Silk (part of Canada’s Monstercat). In one other answer, it flagged Soulfuric as a US label itself. For a UK label, that means a clear “based in” line on your own site and profiles isn’t a formality.

6. Glasgow and Bristol punch above their weight

Glasgow Underground (9 of 21 answers) and Bristol’s Shall Not Fade (8) were the most-named labels from outside London and the south-east. When we asked specifically for labels outside London, ChatGPT also named Futureboogie and Banoffee Pies (Bristol), 20/20 Vision and Tidy Trax (Leeds), Paper Recordings (Manchester) and Drop Music (Nottingham).

What this means for UK house labels

We can’t see inside ChatGPT, but the labels it names tend to have one thing in common: they’re described the same way, in plenty of places, over many years. Here’s what we’d work on if your label is missing.

  • Say what you are, plainly. Your homepage and About page should state your city, your sound and your founding year in one sentence. “Bristol house label releasing lo-fi and deep house since 2014” is easier for an AI to repeat than a mission statement.
  • Pick a lane you can own. The genre prompts were far more open than the broad ones. Being the obvious answer for one sound beats being one of 97 names.
  • Keep your profiles consistent. Make sure Discogs, Beatport, Bandcamp, Resident Advisor, Wikipedia (if you qualify) and your socials describe you in the same terms.
  • Get written about. Interviews, label profiles and “best labels” round-ups in music press give AI tools something to cite.
  • Measure it. Run your own version of these prompts every quarter, and track the traffic AI already sends you in GA4.

UK house music labels and ChatGPT: FAQ

Which UK house music label does ChatGPT recommend most?

Defected. In our test it was named in 13 of 21 answers (62%), well ahead of Glasgow Underground, Glitterbox and Toolroom at 9 each.

How many UK house music labels did ChatGPT mention?

97 different labels across 21 answers. 26 of them appeared more than once, and 71 appeared in only a single answer.

Does ChatGPT always get UK labels right?

No. In 5 of 21 answers it recommended at least one label based outside the UK, such as Soulfuric (US) and Heist (Netherlands), in reply to a question about UK labels.

Will I get the same answers if I ask ChatGPT?

Probably not exactly. AI answers vary between runs, and being signed in, your location and your chat history can all change the result. The pattern, a few big names and a long tail, is the part to pay attention to.

How can a house music label get recommended by ChatGPT?

Be described clearly and consistently: state your city, sound and history on your own site, keep Discogs, Beatport, Bandcamp and Resident Advisor profiles aligned, and earn coverage in music press. Owning a specific genre is easier than competing for “best UK label”.
